Gua Sha

About Gua Sha

Gua Sha, which translates to "scraping" in Chinese, is a therapeutic technique that has been used for centuries in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). It is based on the concept of Qi, the vital life force that flows through the body's meridians. It involves the use of a flat, smooth-edged tool, often made of jade or rose quartz, to gently scrape the skin in specific patterns. The scraping motion is thought to break up blockages, release stagnant energy, improve circulation, stimulate the body's natural healing processes, reduce inflammation, release toxins from the body and promote the smooth flow of Qi, thereby restoring balance to the body.

'Sha; is best defined as the red splotches or petechia that appears on the skin from using the jade tool repeatedly over the area. This skin reaction is nothing to be concerned about, it is part of the therapeutic effect and will usually subside within a few days. You should keep the skin clean and covered, where possible, for at least the first 48 hours.
